System >> Goal

The purpose of setting goals is the win the game. The purpose of building systems is to continue playing the game. True long term thinking is goal-less thinking. It’s not about any single accomplishment. It is about the cycle of endless refinement and continuous improvement. Ultimately, it’s your commitment to the process that will determine your progress

Making our habit shape our identity:

  1. Decide the type of person you want to be
  2. Prove it to yourself with small wins (votes)

The Best Way to Start a New Habit

  1. Implementation intention: If you plan to make some action a habit, tell yourself that you are going to do that habit on [DAY] at [TIME] in [PLACE]

  2. Habit stacking: Special form of implementation intention. Rather than pairing our new habit with a particular time and location, we pair it with a current habit

Motivation is Overrated; Environment Often Matters More

• Small changes in context canlead to large changes in behaviour over time
• Every habit is imitated by a cue. We are more likely to notice cues that stand out
• Make the cues of good habits obvious in our environment
• it’s easier to build habits in a new environment because we are not fighting against old cues

To-do:

• The Habits scorecard
• Take three deep breaths and smile before doing something that I love (eventually I’ll associate this breathe-and-smile routine with being in a good mood)
